Fireball over Andalucia and Murcia, Spain


A bright fireball was observed over Spain’s eastern regions of Andalusia and Murcia at approximately 03:36 UTC on October 6, 2024, featuring a nice final intense flash (fulguration) before disintegrating.

A bright fireball was observed over Spain’s east Andalucia and Murcia at around 03:36 UTC on October 6. The object was detected by several SMART project detectors at Calar Alto, La Hita, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra, Huelva, and Seville observatories

According to the Analysis by Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), the Principal Investigator of the SMART Project, the fireball had an initial speed of around 90 000 km/h (56 000 mph), with an initial altitude of 105 km (65 miles) and final altitude of 70 km (43 miles).

Two videos of the event were recorded by the external cameras at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almeria.
