Schools hope to scoop asteroid dust

It’s a seven-year mission to the far reaches of the solar system and back, to pick up a handful of dirt. Not your average dirt, obviously. The aim of the Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security-Regolith Explorer mission — OSIRIS-REx for short — is to bring back fragments of an asteroid that might include the basic components of life and vital clues to the mystery of how life began on Earth.
