Red Flag cyber operations: Part III – Lackland cyber IO range brings Red Flag home

Move over big trucks, Spurs fans and authentic Mexican cuisine, there’s a new kid on the block synonymous with the Alamo City … Air Force cyber.

As fighter aircraft darkened the skies of Nevada during Red Flag, cyber operators rallied at the 90th Information Operations Squadron IO test range based here. The blue team dug in and made mission assurance look easy to the untrained eye, but setting up the range was not a simple flip of the switch.

“There are a lot of moving parts to pull off a large force exercise like this,” said James Hird, 90th IO Cyber Integration Flight chief, who served as the cyber network defense coordinator for Lackland and white team lead. “Besides the typical planning conferences, we’ve been conducting weekly secure video teleconferences with key players since October. Blue teams identified objectives and range requirements. Red teams worked with white teams to develop master scenario event lists to ensure blue training objectives
