Developmental biology is the field of biology that studies the processes by which multicellular organisms grow and develop. The development of a plant or animal starting from a single fertilized egg into a complex individual with different cell types and tissues obviously requires cells to differentiate during development. Therefore, processes such as cell polarization and asymmetric cell division that lead to cell differentiation are of special importance for biologists.
