Air Force launches WGS-3 satellite

The Air Force successfully launched the third Wideband Global Satellite Communications satellite into orbit Dec. 5 on board a Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

WGS-3 joins the service’s two other WGS satellites, which launched on October 2007 and April 2009. The WGS system will significantly increase the communications capabilities for troops in the field, allies and national leadership, to include the President.

The 3rd Space Operations Squadron at Schriever AFB maintains control of WGS-1 and 2, and is scheduled to assume full control of WGS-3 in May 2010.
