Bernadette VanBuskirk, 6th Space Warning Squadron senior programmer analyst, stands inside of the Pave Phased Array Warning System, Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass., Sept. 11, 2014. VanBuskirk leads a team of operators in finding new ways to increase the efficiency of the radar, designing and updating software, and running diagnostics. PAVE PAWS radar is aimed by electronic adjustment of the timing of incoming and outgoing signals allowing the beam to be rapidly projected in different directions. The radar is capable of detecting ballistic missile attacks and conducting general space surveillance and satellite tracking. Information is relayed to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colo., the Joint Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB, Calif., and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
