Sentinel-5P has been fuelled and is now ready for launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia. Soon the satellite will join the rest of the Sentinel satellites in orbit as part of the Copernicus programme.
Sentinel-5P’s purpose is to collect data on Earth’s atmosphere. It is an intermediary satellite which fills the gap between the past generation of atmospheric monitoring satellites, such as Envisat, and the future generation comprised of Sentinel-4 and -5. The raw data from Sentinel-5P will be sent to the DLR German Aerospace Center where it will be processed and archived. After processing, the data will be distributed to users worldwide.
