New techniques give blood biopsies greater promise

Researchers develop an efficient method for capturing and quantifying tumor DNA from blood prior to sequencing, thereby making blood biopsies cost-effective and scalable. The study demonstrates that nearly 90 percent of the genetic features of a tumor can be detected in blood using standard whole-exome sequencing. Researchers discovered that this approach could be effectively applied in 33 to 49 percent of patients with advanced cancer, a number that is likely to increase as sequencing becomes cheaper.
