Researchers have shown that female red flour beetles reproduce better in male-dominated groups than in unbiased or female-dominated groups. The research demonstrates that this effect is because female beetles wage a chemical war against each other using the chemicals ethyl bezoquinone and methyl benzoquinone to reduce each other’s reproduction.
