Abstract: The Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) was the first nuclear-powered operation of a truly new fission reactor concept in the US in over 40 years. It provided valuable experience and data, demonstrated the passive reactor operation of the Kilopower reactor class, showed that developing a small reactor is not inherently expensive, and demonstrated a space reactor concept that can be used for near-term space science and exploration.
