Abstract: Previous work by this team (Reale et al. 2018) has found that the current assimilation of AIRS (Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder) radiances on a regularly spaced thinning grid is suboptimal, probably because of horizontal error correlation over meteorologically inactive areas.
