Soil status from SMOS

ESA’s SMOS satellite was designed to observe soil moisture and ocean salinity, but this innovative mission also offers insights into Earth’s carbon and methane cycles by mapping soil as it freezes and thaws. Methane emissions may rise as areas of permafrost are lost in a warming climate. SMOS will help us understand the processes underlying with increased emissions of this powerful gas.
