A common assumption in chemistry is that the coordination number of a catalyst’s surface determines the reactivity of the reaction it catalyzes. Strikingly, chemists from Leiden University have now proven that this is not true for nature’s most simple chemical reaction: the dissociation of hydrogen. The researchers managed to measure the so-called absolute reactivities of this reaction, a first in science. They published their findings in Angewandte Chemie.
