An airborne volcano-observing platform was created from an unpiloted aircraft designed for scientific uses in challenging environments. Its flights to Alaska’s Makushin Volcano demonstrated such aircraft could fly beyond pilots’ sight, opening new possibilities for monitoring volcanoes and other hazards worldwide.
