A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2023 XW5 flew past Earth at 0.19 LD / 0.00050 AU (74 189 km / 46 099 miles) from the center of our planet at 02:10 UTC on December 9, 2023.

This is the 107th known asteroid to fly past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 7th so far this month.

2023 XW5 was first observed by MAP, San Pedro de Atacama on December 10 — one day after it made its close approach to our planet.

The object belongs to the Aten group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 4.9 and 11 m (16 – 36 feet).
