A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2024 GJ2 will fly past Earth at a distance of just 0.05 LD / 0.00013 AU (18 700 km / 11 620 miles) at 18:33 UTC on April 11, 2024.
This is the 25th known asteroid to fly past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and, thus far, the closest flyby of the year.
Asteroid 2024 GJ2 was first observed at Pan-STARRS 2, Haleakala on April 9 — 2 days before its close approach to our planet.
The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 2.2 and 5 m (7.2 – 16.4 feet).
