This video shows the first image from the Italian Earth observation satellite mission, IRIDE. The high-resolution strip was captured over central Italy on 5 March 2025.
First we see the town of Fano on the Adriatic coast, before moving southwards over the central Apennine ridge. The image covers towns in central Italy including Fabriano, Foligno, Spoleto and Terni, before sweeping down to Rome and, about 20 km further south, to Ostia on the coast of Lazio.
The image was taken by a multispectral optical instrument on board the first IRIDE microsatellite, the Pathfinder Hawk, which was launched on 14 January 2025. The IRIDE constellation of satellites are tailored to provide information for a wide range of environmental, emergency and security services for Italy.
