The European Union’s Chemicals Regulation, REACH, is one of the most comprehensive legislative frameworks for chemical safety worldwide. Designed to protect human health and the environment from hazardous substances, REACH also poses unique challenges for the space sector where exemptions are rare and obsolescence risks are high.
ESA will hold a REACH awareness webinar on 28 January from 10:00–12:30 CET. This aims to help space professionals and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) gain a clear understanding of REACH requirements and their implications for materials and processes used in space projects. This webinar is relevant to those directly involved in procurement, engineering, or compliance. Register by 27 January via the ESA Learning Hub.
What you’ll learn
- A basic overview of REACH and its regulatory processes.
- The status and timelines for key substances such as Chromium (VI), PFAS, hydrazine, lead, and more.
- Insights into sector-specific compliance recommendations and advocacy measures developed by ESA’s Materials and Processes Technology Board (MPTB).
- An outlook on upcoming regulations, including persistent organic pollutants, occupational exposure limits, and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.
- Answers to frequently asked questions and the opportunity to engage directly with experts.
This session will set the stage for the ESA REACH Tool Webinar on 19 February. Attending both will give a comprehensive view of how to navigate REACH effectively.

ESA REACH Tool webinar: 19 February 2026, 14:00–16:00 CET
A free REACH tool developed by ESA and partners is available online to any European organisation registered with ESA and working in the space industrial supply chain, at the discretion of the ESA REACH Officer. The tool enables users to search substances and materials, and create materials portfolios.
This webinar will follow on from the REACH awareness session on 28 January. It is strongly recommended to attend that session first if you are unfamiliar with the EU chemicals regulation, REACH.
