ESA’s final Cluster spacecraft Tango set for targeted reentry over the South Pacific on September 1


The European Space Agency (ESA) refined Tango’s predicted atmospheric reentry time to 21:30:31 UTC on September 1, with an uncertainty of ±10 seconds after additional spacecraft tracking and ground-based telescope observations. Tango, also designated CLU4, is the fourth and final spacecraft in the Cluster disposal sequence and is expected to reenter over a remote area of the South Pacific Ocean.

ESA’s August 24 prediction placed the reentry at 21:33:20 UTC with an uncertainty of about ±10 minutes. The latest estimate moves the central prediction 2 minutes 49 seconds earlier and reduces the stated timing uncertainty from minutes to seconds as tracking data constrain Tango’s final orbit.

Mission controllers recovered telemetry from Tango after the spacecraft entered safe mode following its final perigee passage. Tango initially failed to communicate normally when it came within range of the Villafranca 2 ground station, then rebooted and transmitted telemetry. Data from the final low-altitude passages of Samba and Tango were collected at 123 km (76 miles) and 130 km (81 miles), respectively, giving ESA information on spacecraft condition and interaction with the upper atmosphere.

Samba and Tango were already on trajectories designed to place their atmospheric reentries over remote areas of the South Pacific before ESA performed additional maneuvers in January 2026. Burns carried out on January 19 and 20 shifted the two reentry locations closer together so the same airborne observation campaign, operating from Tonga, could reach both events on consecutive days. The highly elliptical Cluster orbits evolve through long-term gravitational interactions involving Earth, the Sun and the Moon, allowing their final reentry geometry to be targeted years in advance.

The ROSIE aircraft carries 30 instruments and is intended to operate near the edge of the designated no-fly zone during Tango’s passage. Its payload includes visual and infrared cameras together with instruments that collect spectral measurements of material released during breakup. Researchers use those spectra to identify material signatures and determine which spacecraft materials are melting at different stages of atmospheric entry.

ROSIE completed the first of the two consecutive observation flights when Samba reentered at 21:39:38 UTC on August 31. ESA reported visual acquisition on all tracking cameras and said 29 of the aircraft’s 30 instruments captured data or images. The agency also said Samba’s final predicted reentry time proved accurate to the second, while detailed processing of the observational data remained underway.

All four Cluster spacecraft were built to the same design, giving the Samba and Tango campaign unusual comparative value. A successful Tango observation would provide a second consecutive atmospheric-reentry data set from an identical spacecraft under different trajectory and atmospheric conditions. ESA adjusted the Samba and Tango reentry locations specifically to make that repeat airborne campaign possible; the broader Cluster disposal program itself was established to remove the spacecraft safely at the end of their mission.

Earlier observations of Cluster spacecraft Salsa revealed differences between measurements and pre-reentry models. ESA reported an atmospheric-density mismatch of up to 20% and said Salsa’s breakup seemed to begin slightly earlier than models had predicted. The agency has not established whether the earlier apparent breakup represented a repeatable effect, and the confirmed Samba data together with the planned Tango observation provide additional measurements for examining the discrepancy.

Cluster’s scientific mission ended in 2024 after more than two decades of observations of Earth’s magnetosphere, but the remaining spacecraft continued through their planned disposal sequence. ESA said controllers expected one final communication with Tango to transmit final commands and receive the last spacecraft telemetry of the Cluster program before atmospheric reentry.

The reentry observations are being used to improve models of when spacecraft heat, fragment and release material during atmospheric descent. ESA is also using the measurements to refine predictions of what survives reentry and to support spacecraft designs intended to burn up more completely, reducing the amount of material capable of reaching the surface.
