Maj. Earnest Schmitt, 6th Space Warning Squadron operations officer, stands in front of the Pave Phased Array Warning System, Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass., Sept. 11, 2014. The flag is at half-staff as part of Patriot Day memorial activities. Schmitt ensures members of the 6th SWS are properly trained and equipped to operate the radar. PAVE PAWS radar is aimed by electronic adjustment of the timing of incoming and outgoing signals allowing the beam to be rapidly projected in different directions. The radar is capable of detecting ballistic missile attacks and conducting general space surveillance and satellite tracking. Information is relayed to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colo., the Joint Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB, Calif., and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
