Master Sergeant James L. Nelson is the First Sergeant for the 3rd Combat Communications Support Squadron, Tinker AFB, Okla. He was born in Chicago, Ill., January 14, 1969. Sergeant Nelson graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1987 and after attending Eastern Illinois University for two years, enlisted in the Air Force in 1990. After completing basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, he began technical training at Sheppard AFB, Texas, where he received initial surveillance training. His first duty assignment after training was the 963rd AWAC Squadron at Tinker AFB, Okla., in October of 1990. While stationed at Tinker he was selected for cross-training to become an Enlisted Weapons Director in 1994. In 2001, Sergeant Nelson transferred to Tyndall AFB, Fla., and became an AETC Air Battle Manager formal instructor. In 2003, he was reassigned to the Distributed Operation Center, Kirtland AFB, N.M., where he was the AWACS liaison for the Virtual Warfare Center. In August 2005, Sergeant Nelson transferred to Geilenkirchen Air Base, Germany, and led the Weapons Section for an international flying squadron as Squadron Superintendent. Finally, in 2009, Sergeant Nelson was selected for First Sergeant duty. In October 2009 he arrived at his current duty assignment the 3rd Combat Communications Support Squadron.
